MARCH 2008

Hi, Everyone!

It was great to see so many of you at the Sewing & Stitchery Expo in Puyallup. Each year, it's amazing to see all the fantastic garments you have created from our patterns. We appreciate hearing your stories of how you've used your garments, all the places you have worn them and how you added our pockets to many other garments. Be sure to check our Customer Gallery to see pictures of some of you who stopped by our booth wearing your SAF-T-POCKETS garments.

This year, I was asked by the Bellevue American Sewing Guild chapter to be the speaker at their annual Saturday night fundraiser. I was asked to speak about my life in the sewing industry. It was a challenge thinking of what I would share with the group. I started by going through family pictures and letting memories and events present themselves. My mother was a huge influence on my sewing and I want to share a picture of her and a friend in outfits they created. It was taken in 1928 and Mom was 16 years old. She had seen a Marlene Dietrich movie where she was wearing trousers. Remember, girls didn't wear pants then! She and her friend took Grandpa's pants and made a pattern from them. It also looks like they used Grandma's table cloth to make their new beach pant outfits! My mom is on the right.
This was just her beginning. She went on to create many beautiful garments for herself, my sisters and I, plus skating costumes for all of us. Who influenced your sewing or got you started? My blog will have a place for you to share your stories. Visit my entry about sewing influences to share.

I want to thank the ASG for affording me the opportunity to take a look at my own sewing life and those who influenced me. It has been an evolving process and certainly has never been dull. Now it's our turn to start leading another generation down this wonderful, creative path. Picking up a needle and thread could be one of the best "exercises" you can do for your health, according to the new study conducted at the New York University Medical Center. The study revealed that women who sew experience a significant drop in heart rate, blood pressure and perspiration when compared to women who participate in other leisure activities. When a woman begins to sew, her heart rate drops by up to 11 beats per minute! "The importance of a hobby or creative pursuit cannot be overemphasized," says Robert Reiner, PH.D. of NYU. "If we don't allow our bodies to rest from the pressures of everyday life, we are placing ourselves at risk for heart disease or other illnesses."

Our two new patterns have arrived. Plenty of Pockets Pants and Flounce About Jacket are now in stock. We listened to customer requests for a more fitted jacket and pants that still offer the benefits of pockets. We think you will be pleased with the results.

We are now offering lots of new colors of fold-over elastic for trimming t-shirts, vests and jackets. Check them out!

In April I will be a vendor at the International Quilt Festival in Chicago, IL. If you attend that show, please stop and say hello.

Happy Sewing,
Marsha

MARCH TRAVEL TIPS

Make sure a neighbor knows you're gone so someone will report any suspicious activity around your house. Ask a neighbor to collect your mail or have the post office hold it for you. Stop your newspaper delivery as uncollected papers advertise you're not home.

Tuck a flashlight into your suitcase. It's nice to carry when walking in the evening and great to have on the night stand if you need to get up at night.

Gift for traveling friends: Are you a whiz on the PC and printer? Put your technical skills to good use and produce a set of personal business cards for your traveler friends. Rather than print their full contact details, put just their name and email address. This makes swapping contact details with new acquaintances both easy and safe. Make a quick trip around the aisles at your local drugstore and you can make a handy little Flight Survival Kit. Include: aspirin, ear plugs, hard candies (to relieve air pressure on landing), mouthwash, breath mints, hand-wipes and a pen in a cosmetic bag.

Travel Journal: Keep a journal while traveling to record what you see as well as your reactions and special moments.
