Workshops


Bring Marsha McClintock to your store or organization for a special teaching event. Marsha's classes can be customized to your needs. A full day consists of a morning session and an afternoon session, and totals six hours. You can mix and match from the classes listed below. Some can be customized to fit shorter time frames, if needed. Contact us for more information.

Fees:
$750 per full day (6 hours of class time) plus travel expenses, lodging and meals
$400 additional half day (3 hours of class time)
Minimum charge is for one full day.


Lectures



Class Name:   Clothing and Accessory Transformers (More than Meets the Eye)
Type:   lecture
Length:   2 hours
Description:   Maximize your sewing time making items that transform for different looks. See jackets and vests with detachable sleeves, collars or cuffs. Learn to make reversible garments that always button correctly. You will see an expandable tote bag which zips into its own pocket, plus other accessories that transform for many different looks. What a simple way to expand your wardrobe!


Class Name:   Fun with Leather and Suede
Type:   lecture
Length:   2 hours
Description:   Don't be intimidated by the mere thought of working with leather. Learn how and where to purchase skins, the sewing supplies and equipment you need, pattern suggestions, cutting and marking. See ways to use leather in garments or as accents, in addition to bindings on woven fabrics. Marsha will show you how to take existing leather clothing and create new things from it. You will be creating beautiful leather garments or accessories before you know it. You'll see coin purses, leather purses, totes, belts and other fun items.


Class Name:   It's in the Details
Type:   lecture
Length:   2 hours
Description:   Details are what take a garment from ordinary to exquisite. As the designer, your decisions are what make the garment truly unique. Marsha will show you how to make and apply unique trims, unusual closures, in-seam buttonholes, fun pockets and sleeve treatments. There will be sample garments with great details to inspire you to get started adding new and original details to all of your projects.


Class Name:   Leather Coat: Second Time Around
Type:   lecture
Length:   1.5 or 2 hours
Description:   Wonder what to do with your old leather coat or a thrift store find? You will learn the right techniques, tools and everything you need to turn it into fun accessories. You'll see coin purses, leather purses, totes, belts and other fun items. See how to use existing seams, pockets and zippers in your new creations. After this class, you will be eyeing every leather garment in sight so you can upcycle it.


Class Name:   On the Flip Side
Type:   lecture
Length:   2 hours
Description:   Reversible clothing provides two unique looks in just one garment. Save time in construction by eliminating facings, linings and handwork. Maximize sewing time and free up space in your closet or suitcase. Learn how to select the right patterns for reversible clothing, see the best fabrics and construction tips that make it all work. Marsha will show you pockets that flip from side to side, garments that always button on the correct side, a reversible garment from a single layer of double-sided fabric plus lots more creative ideas.


Class Name:   Sew Accessorized
Type:   lecture
Length:   1.5 or 2 hours
Description:   See wonderful accessories you can make to give as gifts or to accent your own wardrobe. Tote bags are very popular and you will see a large variety, including one that folds into its own pocket. Marsha will show easy to make travel accessories, a fabulous wrap that can be worn many ways, and several easy to make and wear scarves. You'll see many samples and learn how easy it is to make them.


Class Name:   Sew You're Traveling
Type:   lecture
Length:   1 or 2 hours
Description:   Is your first thought when planning a trip, "What am I going to wear?" See a wardrobe of interchangeable pieces you can wear for a week or a month. Discover styles, fabrics and colors that are the best travelers. Learn how pockets add security, reversible clothes maximize versatility and accessories pull it together. Then see a demonstration of packing the wardrobe in a carry-on suitcase.


Hands-On Workshops



Class Name:   Pocket Fun
Type:   workshop
Length:   3 hours
Description:   Pockets are practical but can also be decorative. You will make samples of two great pockets and learn about several others. The triangle pocket is easy to make and adds a couture touch to any garment. The double welt pocket is a patch pocket that is two pockets in one. One welt pocket is perfect for a cell phone and the other has a flap closure for security. This pocket is very convenient on jackets or on a pant leg.
Kit Fee:   $12.00 (includes: pocket templates, interfacing, all pocket materials, a Snip Its brochure on making a triangle pocket, and a Snip Its brochure on adding pockets to ready to wear)


Class Name:   Reversible Tank Top
Type:   workshop
Length:   4 hours
Description:   We will make a reversible tank top made from two different fabrics. There will be XS-3XL Twice As Nice tanks available for students to try on or you can pre-fit the pattern before class. The patterns will be mailed to students a few weeks before class. This class will teach you about compatible fabrics, seam finishes, a great way to finish neck and armholes with no handwork, the best ways to hem the garments and optional ways to finish the neck and armholes with binding or fold-over elastic. You will complete a tank top that will be a great wardrobe basic for everyday or travel.
Kit Fee:   $14.00 (includes: SAF-T-POCKETS Twice As Nice pattern and a piece of Velcro)
Supply List:   sewing machine, preshrunk lightweight fabrics for Side 1 and Side 2 that are compatible for washing/dry cleaning, matching thread, 1/4 yd of 1/2" ribbon in matching or complimentary color, general sewing supplies


Class Name:   Sensational Scarves
Type:   workshop
Length:   4 hours
Description:   Eternally fashionable, scarves are the most versatile accessory a woman can own. Make two great scarves that are quick, don't need to be tied and make terrific gifts. In addition, you will make a Vest-S-Cape, an elegant wrap which can be worn as a vest or cape. All are made on the rolled hem of the serger. Marsha will share her favorite scarves and all you can do with them.
Kit Fee:   $15.00 (includes: Sew Accessorized pattern, fold-over elastic, 1/4" elastic, water soluble stabilizer)


Class Name:   Sensational Vest-S-Cape
Type:   workshop
Length:   2 hours
Description:   You will make a Vest-S-Cape, an elegant wrap that can be worn as a vest or cape and is destined to become a wardrobe favorite. It is made on the rolled hem of the serger. Seeing all the different ways it can be worn, plus other scarf ideas, will get your creative juices flowing. Made from the SAF-T-POCKETS Sew Accessorized pattern.
Kit Fee:   $15.00 (includes: Sew Accessorized pattern, fold-over elastic, 1/4" elastic, and water soluble stabilizer)


Class Name:   Surface Design: Create One of a Kind Fabric
Type:   workshop
Length:   2 hours
Description:   Create one of a kind fabric using stamps, fabric paints, foil, silk screens, random pleating, and a cake cooling rack. In this class you will have the opportunity to try these different techniques and see all the fantastic things that can be done with them. Come prepared to have lots of fun and stretch your creativity.
Kit Fee:   $18.00 (includes: foil, foil adhesive, pre-stamped fabric squares, sponges, Steam-A-Seam, Styrofoam, interfacing and printed instructions)

Class Name:   Travel Accessories
Type:   workshop
Length:   4 hours
Description:   Come make some unique accessories for your next trip. We'll make a portable zipper pocket you can pin in any garment for security, a great clothes line for hotel room laundry, and a clever jewelry roll with three zipper pockets to carry your jewelry when traveling. Plus, see many other novel travel accessories you will want to make.
Kit Fee:   $14.00 (includes: pocket fabric, 3 zippers, elastic, ribbon, fabric for jewelry roll, clear vinyl, fold-over elastic, and fusible fleece)
Supply List:   sewing machine, Teflon foot for machine (if you have one), scissors, ruler, general sewing supplies
